This painting was inspired by the Mexican festival, "Dia de los Muertos." I began painting a desert scene and was suddenly inspired to paint hands, one with blood-red dots on it. On a whim, I looked up the Aztec mythology and traditions which inspired the festival. I learned that one way to appease the King of the Dead was to bury the body with blood on his right hand. Despite its visceral suggestion, this painting expresses the trust with which we can choose to accept death.
Giclee Print on canvas. 11"x 17".
